Employer Newsletter - July 21, 2025

July 21, 2025

As a collaborator in Alberta's health care ecosystem, the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) is committed to supporting employers in fostering a professional, competent and ethical nursing workforce through Right-touch relational regulation.

2025-2026 Renewal Begins Soon

Key Dates

Renewal Period: Aug. 1, 2025 to Sept. 30, 2025
Upcoming Practice Year (permits valid): Oct. 1, 2025 to Sept. 30, 2026

Individuals who do not complete their renewal application by Sept. 30, 2025 will not be able to practise in the upcoming practice year, beginning Oct. 1, 2025.

Fee Structure

The CRNA’s Council voted to keep the permit fees unchanged for the 2025-2026 practice year. The renewal fee for a permit remains $480 (plus GST). Additionally, the breakdown of prorated fees remains unchanged. Details can be found in the Funding and Fees section of our website.

While some employers may cover the cost of permit fees for employees, it is each applicant or registrant’s responsibility to ensure their initial or renewal application is complete, including payment. The CRNA issues payment receipts for all completed permit applications and renewal applications. All CRNA registrants with completed applications can download these payment receipts in their College Connect accounts.

Employer Information and Responsibilities

The CRNA will continue to share renewal information via the Employer Newsletter. Once the renewal period closes, the CRNA will provide a list directly to employers with the names of individuals whose permits have expired. Those individuals are not entitled to work under a protected title or designation in Alberta.

Employers can easily verify the permit statuses of their employees at any time using the CRNA’s Employer Lookup.

Important note: when verifying employee permit information, please ensure you are using the approved CRNA application above. If using third-party applications or tools, the CRNA cannot verify the integrity of the information provided.

Other Information

Leading up to and throughout the renewal period, the CRNA provides renewal-related information to registrants via email, their College Connect portal and periodically via text message. Registrants with incomplete renewal applications receive regular reminders about the renewal period deadline.

Notice Regarding Canada Health Infoway's (CHI) Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tool

The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) is aware of a new AI scribe service being offered for free by CHI to primary care providers, including registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs).

Individuals who are interested in using the tool will need to submit a privacy impact assessment to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) of Alberta for review and comment.

Anyone with questions related to incorporating AI tools into RN or NP practice may reach out to the CRNA's Practice Guidance team.

Supervision for Graduate Nurses (GNs) and Graduate Nurse Practitioners (GNPs)

The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) reminds employers that individuals practising under the title of graduate nurse (GN) or graduate nurse practitioner (GNP) hold provisional permits and must be supervised in their work.

Provisional permits allow these individuals to practise under the titles noted above for up to 12 months in total following graduation or application completion before they pass the applicable registration exam for their designation.

Anyone with a provisional permit works under the Supervision Standards to ensure patient safety — they receive enhanced supervision and are not allowed to perform certain activities.

Employers with questions related to provisional permits may reach out to the CRNA's Practice Guidance team.
