The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) held its quarterly Council meeting on Dec. 13, 2024. The recording and highlights are now available.

The CRNA's CEO and Registrar, Joy Peacock, shared some of the initiatives the College will prioritize in 2025, including a focus on using data to inform decision-making, pursuing knowledge dissemination opportunities (provincially, nationally and internationally), and continuing to tackle health workforce challenges as a partner in the health care ecosystem. Joy also shared the strategic investment initiatives and projects she intends to achieve in 2025.
Council was given an update on the ongoing work related to the regulatory spectrum which encompasses the CRNA’s philosophy of balance between the legislated regulatory mandate and compassion and proportionality. The roadmap showcased upcoming opportunities for engagement with partners, registrants and the public.
Leadership Review and Governance Committee (LRGC)
Council approved the LRGC’s proposed amendments to GP 21, Council and Committee Selection Policy, as presented.
Finance and Audit Committee (FAC)
Council approved the FAC’s recommendation to approve the audited financial statements for the year ended Sept. 30, 2024.
Pension Compliance Committee (PCC)
Council approved the PCC’s recommendation to approve the draft audited pension fund financial statements for the pension year ended June 30, 2024.
Appointment of Auditors
Council approved the FAC’s and PCC’s joint recommendation to appoint PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) LLC to conduct the audit for the CRNA financial statements and pension fund financial statements for FY2025 and FY2026.
Modernization of Standards of Practice
Council received an update regarding the new CRNA Standards Framework. This framework aligns with the other regulatory frameworks that have been approved by Council and supports the modernization of the Standards of Practice to ensure that they set out clear expectations and are concise, easy to understand, culturally informed, enforceable and accessible to the public.
Nurse Practitioners Initiatives Workplan
A status update was presented on the NP Initiatives Workplan. CRNA staff shared details with Council on completed activities and those anticipated in the months ahead. Many of the initiatives shared are under development and further information will be shared when the work is in a more final state. The workplan was originally endorsed by Council in December 2023.
Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) Engagement
The CRNA contracted an external IDEA consultant to complete engagement sessions pertaining to the development of an IDEA framework. Council received a summary of the information gathered from the engagement sessions, a list of proposed approaches to advance IDEA within the CRNA and an outline of next steps to develop the IDEA Framework.
Council Balanced Scorecard
Management presented the first Council Balanced Scorecard with available data, effective Q4 FY2024. The balanced scorecard design and proposed measures were approved by Council in September 2024.
