Policy Analyst — Nurse Practitioner
At the CRNA, we are committed to regulatory excellence and advancing safe, competent nursing practice in Alberta. As part of this commitment, we are seeking a Policy Analyst — Nurse Practitioner to support our regulatory functions.
Reporting to the Director of Regulatory Initiatives, this position will focus on regulatory policy development with specific expertise in nurse practitioner (NP) practice. The Policy Analyst — Nurse Practitioner will work across key regulatory areas: practice standards development, policy analysis, partner consultation and regulatory framework advancement.
As the regulatory body for Alberta's registered nurses, nurse practitioners and nursing students, this role provides an opportunity to blend clinical expertise with regulatory knowledge to strengthen public protection and shape the future of NP practice in the province.
What You Will Do
Policy Analysis and Development
- Lead the development of comprehensive research and policy papers focused on NP practice and regulation.
- Conduct environmental scans, literature reviews and interviews to inform NP policy initiatives.
- Analyze complex regulatory and system issues, identifying gaps and recommending innovative solutions to the CRNA leadership team and Council.
- Prepare NP-focused decision, briefing and discussion documents that support strategic and regulatory decision making.
Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing
- Develop and maintain an NP community of practice across health and post-secondary systems to share knowledge and inform policy development.
- Act as a key liaison with other regulators, government agencies and system partners on NP-related policy matters.
- Represent the CRNA on provincial, interprovincial and pan-Canadian NP-focused regulatory committees.
Strategic Regulatory Leadership
- Monitor NP-related legislation, regulations and health system activity to ensure the CRNA’s policies remain current and forward looking.
- Recommend regulatory, practice and governance policy changes aligned with the CRNA’s legislative mandate and best practices.
- Support internal collaboration across the CRNA's departments to promote cohesive and evidence-informed regulatory approaches for NPs.
Thought Leadership and Communication
- Lead NP-focused regulatory knowledge sharing initiatives, including publications, presentations and conference contributions.
- Develop briefing materials, strategic options and policy documents to guide Council and executive decision making.
- Advise on international, federal and provincial NP frameworks, trends and innovations to enhance the CRNA’s regulatory role.
Organizational Support
- Provide policy support across the CRNA's departments and governance bodies, including Council and committees.
- Support diversity and inclusion initiatives with a focus on NP registrants and policy implications.
- Ensure alignment between NP policies and the CRNA’s strategic priorities, legislation and public protection goals.
What You Possess
Education
- Master’s degree in health, nursing, social sciences, public administration or a related discipline.
Experience
- 7-10 years experience as a nurse practitioner in clinical settings (a combination of experience and education will be considered) with the following:
- Knowledge of acute and continuing care NP roles and practice settings
- Demonstrated leadership experience
- Knowledge of health system issues, initiatives and opportunities
- Knowledge of current regulatory issues, initiatives and opportunities (an asset)
- Knowledge of legislation and regulation relevant to nursing and health care (an asset)
Skills & Competencies
- Regulatory Insight: Ability to maintain currency as an NP while interpreting and applying legislation to provide recommendations on sensitive policy issues
- Relationship Building: Demonstrated ability to build sustainable relationships both internally and externally with the organization
- Research & Analysis: Excellent analytical and research skills with critical thinking abilities
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication with strong meeting facilitation skills
- Organization & Planning: Strong organizational skills with ability to prioritize and adjust quickly to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Technology Proficiency: Strong proficiency in MS365 applications and virtual meeting platforms
- Professionalism & Discretion: Ability to recognize and handle confidential information in a professional manner
- Adaptability & Execution: Ability to execute effectively while adjusting to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment
