The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) is seeking registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) to fill positions on its Council.

Who Can Apply for Appointment as a Registrant Member of Council?

RNs and NPs who are interested in being considered for appointment as a member of Council must:

  • Be a resident of Alberta
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be registered in good standing with the CRNA
  • Meet the eligibility criteria outlined in the Bylaw 2.6 including holding an active RN or NP practice permit
  • Meet competencies and attributes outlined in the Council and Committees Selection Policy (Appendix 1)
  • Not be a spouse, partner, child or parent of a current member of the CRNA’s Council
  • Not be currently employed with the CRNA or another nurse regulator in Alberta or across Canada

About Council and the College

What is the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta?

The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) is a health profession regulatory college. It has been delegated the authority under the Health Professions Act (HPA) to regulate Alberta’s registered nurses, nurse practitioners, certified graduate nurses, graduate nurses and graduate nurse practitioners.

The HPA responsibilities of regulatory colleges are to protect the public and hold registrants accountable for the care they provide.  As such, the CRNA’s regulatory responsibilities include:

  • Approving education programs for entry into the profession
  • Setting registration and registration renewal requirements
  • Setting, maintaining and enforcing practice, conduct and ethical standards for the care registrants provide
  • Setting continuing competence requirements for registrants to maintain competency in their practice over time​​
  • Receiving, investigating and addressing complaints
  • Holding registrants accountable for their practice and behaviour
  • Maintaining a public register ​​

Who Makes up Council?

Council is made up of 16 members:

  • Eight (8) registrant members (RNs or NPs) appointed by the CRNA
  • Eight (8) public members appointed by the Government of Alberta 

What Is the Role of Council?

In fulfilling its mandate in the HPA and the Registered Nurses Profession Regulation, Council have the following oversight roles: 

  • Regulatory Oversight - the College register contains registrants that provide safe, competent and ethical care.
  • Risk Oversight - the College has a culture of proactive and deliberate risk management. 
  • Financial Oversight - the College maintains its financial viability through strategic resource allocation. The College is committed to pension viability and compliance with pension legislation.  
  • Governance/Operational Oversight - the Council governs the College activities within public interest and within applicable legislation.  
  • Strategic Oversight - the College achieves its strategic direction within its regulatory mandate.  
  • Culture Oversight - the College maintains responsible and healthy relationships externally and internally.

What Is the Role of Council Members?

The role of Council members is to collectively make decisions within the context of the CRNA’s mandate and oversight roles to protect the public interest. Council members are not involved in running the CRNA’s day-to-day operations.

What Are the Expectations?

The Council member are expected to:

  • Fulfill term of appointment for three (3) years, commencing Oct. 1, 2025, and expiring Sept. 30, 2028.
  • Be available, at minimum, for:
    • A three-year term of appointment
    • Attending four (4) two-day Council quarterly meetings per year
    • Attending approximately 12 additional days per year for ad-hoc meetings, orientation, pension education, training and development, annual retreat, and governance committee participation 
    • Reviewing meeting materials, provided in advance of each meeting
    • Attending meetings in person or virtually, dependent on meeting type
  • Access online materials and conference calls, expecting members are comfortable using a computer (specifically MS Office and Teams) and have a stable internet connection. 
  • Ensure their personal interests do not interfere with their duties as a Council member. The CRNA’s GP 2 - Conflict of Interest Protocol (nurses.ab.ca) outlines the CRNA's requirements and disclosure process.

When Does Council Meet?

Newly appointed members will attend their first quarterly Council meeting on Sept. 18 - 19, 2025, as an observer. After the commencement of their term of appointment on Oct. 1, 2025, new members of Council will attend quarterly meetings of Council as voting members.

Additional Council meetings for 2025 - 2026 have been scheduled for the dates below:

  • Dec. 11 - 12, 2025
  • March 19 - 20, 2026

All expression of interest applications must be submitted online through the CRNA website, linked below. Following submission of their expression of interest application, applicants will be directed to submit a current resumé through a secure email address.  

IMPORTANT: 

The expression of interest application will ask you to:

  • Provide your contact information
  • Introduce yourself
  • Self-evaluate against a list of competencies and attributes* that includes ranking yourself on a scale of 1 to 5 for each competency and providing details to support your self-ranking
  • Submit your current resumé

*The desired competencies and attributes are what Council should possess as a group. Do not be discouraged from applying if you have a few competencies and attributes — they may be exactly what Council is looking for. Everyone will possess a select few and contribute in their own way to the collective body.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Materials Should I Review?

Can I Apply if I Do Not Live in Edmonton?

Eligible applicants must be Alberta residents and are not required to live in Edmonton.

Am I Obligated to Inform My Employer That I Am Applying?

Being a member of Council is an important responsibility that will require a time commitment during weekday business hours. You may be required to take time away from work, use your judgment to determine how to advise your employer.

What Happens After I Apply?

After all expressions of interest and resumés have been reviewed and assessed against the Council Competencies and Attributes Profile, applicants who are a match will be contacted for an interview.

When Will I Hear if I Am Shortlisted for Interview?

Applicants shortlisted for an interview can expect to be contacted in early March 2025.  

If I Am Shortlisted for Interview, When Will Interviews Be Held?

Interviews will take place between March 17 – 26, 2025.

If I Am Shortlisted for Interview, Is the Interview in Person or Virtual?

All interviews will be conducted virtually.

Will I Need to Provide References?

If you are being considered for recommendation for appointment, you will be required to provide references. These references will be contacted before your recommendation can be considered final.

If I Am Appointed to Council, Is There an Orientation Before I Begin?

Individuals appointed to Council will receive a comprehensive orientation. Council members are also provided with opportunities for professional development related to their role as Councillor.

Is the Position of Council Member a Paid Position or Voluntary Work?

Appointed Council members are considered volunteers. They are, however, remunerated at a per diem rate of $205 for less than four (4) hours and $375 for equal to or over four (4) hours spent in meetings. They are also reimbursed for associated travel, meal and accommodation expenses. Members of Council are not currently remunerated for preparation time.

Where Are Meetings Held?

Meetings held in person will take place at the CRNA’s office: 11120 178 St NW, Edmonton, AB. Meetings may also be offered virtually or in a hybrid format.

In circumstances where there may be a requirement to participate in an in-person meeting held off-site (e.g., Council retreats), members of Council are reimbursed for associated travel, meal and accommodation expenses.  

On What Days of the Week Are Council Meetings Held?

Historically, meetings are held on Thursdays and Fridays during the CRNA’s business hours.

Is Travel Required?

The only travel required is for in-person meetings. Council members who do not live in the Edmonton area are reimbursed for required travel, meal and accommodation expenses when attending in-person meetings.
